Total Joint Replacement Surgery

Center for Special Surgery developed a total joint replacement program that allows local patients to recover in the comfort of their own home and out of town patients to recover in the comfort of a Fargo-West Fargo based hotel. The program is designed to make total joint replacement look and feel like any other outpatient procedure typically done in the hospital or another surgery center.

How do I know I’m a candidate for outpatient joint replacement?

  • The success of an outpatient total joint program relies heavily on patient selection. While outpatient joint replacement is not for everyone, it does work for healthy, motivated patients with support at home to help with the recovery process.

Doesn’t joint replacement surgery typically require a hospital stay?

  • In our region, most joint replacement procedures are done in the hospital. While performing total joint replacement outpatient is a newer concept in our region, it is not new nationally and it is our belief this will be the expectation rather than the exception in the near future.

How does physical therapy work if I’m not at the hospital?

  • Our physical therapist partners will visit with you on your surgery day and follow up with a home visit the day after your surgery. For out-of-town patients, therapists will meet you at the local hotel where you're staying.

  • Once you successfully complete your first therapy session at home or at your hotel, you have the option to visit with the physical therapist of your choice, just like you would if you had this procedure done at the hospital.

Will my insurance cover this?

  • Most all commercial insurances will cover outpatient joint replacement surgery.

  • Medicare plans will cover total knee, hip and shoulder replacement surgery.

WHAT IS ROBOTIC-ASSISTED SURGERY?

  • Robotic-assisted surgery is a surgical approach that utilizes advanced robotic systems to aid surgeons during procedures. These systems consist of robotic arms equipped with precision instruments and a high-definition camera, controlled by the surgeon.

HOW DOES THE ROBOTIC SYSTEM ASSIST THE SURGEON DURING THE PROCEDURE?

  • The robotic system provides the surgeon with enhanced visualization, dexterity, and precision. The surgeon controls the robotic arms and instruments, which offers a magnified, 3D view of the surgical site. Robotic systems are not a substitute for the surgeon's expertise but instead work in harmony with their skills. Surgeons maintain full control over the entire procedure, with the robot serving as an assistive tool to help them attain the intended outcomes.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF ROBOTIC SURGERY FOR PATIENTS?

  • The potential benefits of robotic surgery for patients may include enhanced results, such as quicker recovery times, decreased complication risks, and increased longevity of joint replacements.
